The greenhouse gas removal potential of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) to support the UK's net-zero emission target

The UK is the first major economy to legislate reduction of all GHG emissions net-zero. Greenhouse gas removal (GGR) approaches are likely be required support 2050 net-zero target by offsetting residual from ‘hard-to-abate’ sectors. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) investigated as one technical solution for GGR. This research used process modelling lifecycle assessment identify GGR potential three BECCS supply chains. Results show that chains have significant net-negative CO2e between −647 −1137 kg MWh−1. Emissions were compared per unit energy output, biomass area each chain assess sustainability implications. large-scale features robust technologies high capacity factor. It produces greatest electricity generation annual GGR, however, demands large amounts raising issues. medium-scale (CHP) provides due its higher efficiency. Limitations a low factor, demand-supply balance non-existent decentralised CCS infrastructure. (hydrogen) more versatile, producing hydrogen decarbonisation not just power, but heat transport sits in middle has greater benefits perspective, yet, infrastructure established, costs remain uncertain. relative performance alternative should consider direct links CO2 sustainable land use, well potential.
